INTELLIGENT COMPUTER ASSISTED INSTRUCTION (ICAI)
INTELLIGENT COMPUTER ASSISTED INSTRUCTION
WHAT IS ICAI?
Intelligent Computer Assisted Instruction (ICAI) involves applying Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques to Computer Assisted Instruction. ICAI are systems which utilize the techniques of expert system and artificial intelligence to help a person learn interactively. It makes ICAI systems extremely flexible and allows the student much learner control of interaction than is traditionally possible in Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI).
ICAI allows for more directed questioning and informative answering for the trainee or student than the question-answer strategies employed by conventional CAI. It allows both the student and the program a flexibility in the learning environment that more closely resembles what actually occurs between the student and the teacher in the learning environment.
The basic view of this system is that they serve as the student's private tutor responding to the student's individual needs. ICAI systems have changed the structure of a classroom, the teacher is no longer the focal point of classroom activity. Rather teachers serve as a guide for the students in their learning.
COMPONENTS OF ICAI:
1. Problem-solving Expertise:
This is the "expert" part of the system. The student using this type of program is presented with some information from the problem-solving expertise component. This is the knowledge base of this type of AI program. The student responds in some way to the material by answering questions or otherwise demonstrating his or her understanding.
2. Student Model:
The student model analyses the student’s responses and decides on a course of action. Typically this involves either presenting some review material or allowing the student to advance to the next level of knowledge presentation.
3. Tutoring Model:
The tutoring model may or may not be employed at this point, depending on the student’s level of mastery of the material. The system does not allow the student to advance further than his or her own level of mastery.
Most of ICAI programs in use today operate in a set sequence of presentation of new material, evaluation of student's response and employment of tutorial if necessary.
CHARACTERISTICS OF ICAI:
There are numerous unique features of ICAI.
One of the most useful characteristics is its adaptability for distance learning. ICAI programs differentiate the material to be taught from the method of teaching. They allow students to learn via discovery. They also develop student’s problem solving skills and Provides regular and timely interaction with the instructor and current feedback.
Students can repeat their tutorials as often as needed and work at their own pace. ICAI can adapt to the student's needs. It acquires information about the student’s current knowledge and their goals in learning the subject and then creates a user profile based on this knowledge. It can then adjust itself to the individual student. This web-based instruction helps in communication between students and instructors within seconds via the internet. Feedback from the instructor can be obtained immediately.
ADVANTAGES:
2. Even weaker students are obliged to participate actively, they often remain passive in lectures.
3. The computer will wait patiently for an answer and does not express annoyance with wrong response.
4. Interactive graphics make it possible to sample many more illustrations that could easily be shown in a text book.
5. ICAI gives flexibility for students so that they can work at their own speed at the time that is best for them.
6. It provides anywhere, anytime learning so that students can learn at a home, at school or anywhere there is computer with an internet connection.
7. ICAI also gives students to an opportunity to learn computer skills which benefit them in many aspects of their lives.
DISADVATAGES:
2. Rapid advances in technology requiring updates.
3. Webcast and live broadcast modules available only at specified times.
4. Purchase of programs required.
5. Expenses associated with purchase of programs and computer equipment may be high.
6. Learner or instructor’s computer literacy is necessary.
